Oltre a mostrare tali cambiamenti nel DNA, un altro dato interessante fornito dalla ricerca è che le sequenze ripetute sono state rilevate nell’ippocampo, regione cerebrale sensibile agli stimoli ambientali (Baillie et. al., 2011) e che, al contrario delle altre aree del cervello, continua la differenziazione e la divisione cellulare anche nella prima settimana di vita (Bayer, 1980). Alla luce di tale evidenza, l’accumulo dei retrotrasposoni L1 nell’ippocampo dei topi che non hanno ricevuto cure materne adeguate, potrebbe contribuire a spiegare il comportamento ansioso sviluppato in età adulta da quei bambini che sono cresciuti con genitori trascuranti e poco sensibili.
